Wallflowers and my Nephews--a Beautiful Combination

One of my emerging favorite bands in the Wallflowers. So you will imagine my glee when I punched in my second favorite song by them and out came a video based on the series Dexter, of which my nephews have a recurring role as Dexter as a young child. The clearest picture of the acting twins that you can see is at 1:47 in the video, but they show up several times after as well.

The song is a beautiful lament, not meant as a statement of theology, but rather a prayer of the heart. Here are the lyrics:
Seems like the world's gone underground
No gods or heroes
Dare to go down
Tear drops from a hole in heaven come
Overhead like ravens
Dropping down like bombs
Through the mornings silver frosted glow
God says nothing back
But I told you so
I told you so

God bless the void
Of my daydreams
Back in the snow
Making angel wings
Slow motion dancing lights have gone
Sail beneath the burning yellow sun
I'm calling out to the deep ends of my bones
Time says nothing back
But I told you so
I told you so

Still waters rising in my mind
Black and deep
Smoke behind my eyes
Last night I could not sleep at all
I hallucinated that you were in my arms
To be in your heart
I filled my own
Love says nothing back
But I told you so
I told you so

I'm still here
And climbing every rung
If someone saw something
Now Someone speak up
Back over the rotted bridge I cross
Open up these graves
Let these bodies talk
I'm Burried under leaves blood red and gold
Death says nothing back
But I told you so
I told you so....

Gift Certificates and the Art of Budget Maintenence

I recieved a number of gift certificates for Christmas. Which has been a real blessing. I got some faux fiestaware from Walmart, a CD, a pair of sweatpants (on clearance even), and several books. I am very thankful.

While the Walmart gift certificate allowed me to purchase some useful things for my home (like presentable dishware), the Borders and Barnes and Noble gift certificates awakened a monster sleeping within. Namely, the book buying bug. And while I got several books I had been wanting today...I also discovered several more that I really want.

And it got me to thinking...a lot of my life...perhaps too much...is lived on a binge and purge cycle. I tend to read voraciously, and then not read a lot at all. I tend to immerse myself in one type of music for a long while, and then ignore that type of music all together for a short time. Sometimes I get sucked into sleeping a lot and at odd times, and other times I go for a week or two with only 5 hours of sleep a day half of the time.

The same is true with my introversion/extroversion balance. I tend to go through long phases where I "go into my cave" and socialize as little as possible, and then I go through similar phases where I hunger to socialize all the time.

I tend to do the same at work. There are times at work when I wish I could just live and sleep there. I have so much to do, and it is so important to do it. Then I go through similar phases when I seem to barely be able to get my work done and it is all I can do to do just enough to get by.

The same is true right now is true with shopping. I loved buying nephews their playful yet cheap Christmas presents and spending my gift certificates. But I need to tighten my budget and curtail month to month personal spending here soon.

After all....April 15 is coming!

Muticultural Haircutting experiences and my newest adventure

Well, once again I have had a multicultural haircutting adventure.

My first experience of this kind was when I was in KC KS. I went into a haircutting school and got assigned to a gentleman who "had never cut Caucasian hair before". He suggested that when he got to a barber shop he would simply do the vaccuum cutter for us white folks, as getting a sight line for cutting was too difficult with us.
Soon, I had several students standing around me learning how to cut a "Caucasian man's" hair. (He was so carefult to call me Caucasian instead of white)

A couple of years later I went into a haircutting place to get my hair done before my sister's wedding. This woman was Laotian. She kept telling me, no matter what I said, "I give you clipper cut #5, YOU LIKE. YOU SEE. SIT DOWN." She was correct about what I would like, but the language and cultural barriers were hillarious.

Today I had a man that had grown up in Spain and in Italy cut my hair at Fantastic Sam's. Some how my understanding of what I wanted and his understanding of what I wanted got mixed up, and now my hair is very bleach blonde! The nephews were scared of me when I came home, and I am still not sure what to think, except to say that they adventure of a new dew was a lot of fun! I am a little scared of what others are going to think once I get home though.
