Closed doors and crosses have always been the result of following Jesus. (69)
What happened in the 80s and 90s was the yuppizationof evangelicalism, which meant that evangelicals could once again embrace patriotism, consumerism, materialism, and the franchising of Christianity (37)

That second comment is so true!
A paper I read for my research about Regan validates the second comment.
Though the lingo may change, I think those problems (nationalism being elevated to a spiritual virtue, materialism, conformity, etc.) have plagued the church for much longer than 20 years. Where were the yuppies when the southern church was justifying slavery in america?
The only reason I think this is worth pointing out is that, by blaming yuppies or republicans or megachurches or some other close-at-hand target, we ignore the thing that really needs to change - our own heart.
Love the new blog layout, by the way!
Thanks, Kim, for calling it like it is. I do believe that there are times that things are just brought more to the forefront than others though.
The comment was in relation to the evolution of the "Jesus people" movement of the 60s and 70s. That basically the movement became and institution, and the institution became a franchise.
