Sermon Snippet....Any Thoughts or Help??

Right now I am working on a sermon on John 21: 14ff

Title: Now what?

Key Thought: New Life Requires New Living

The Four Key Statements and Corresponding Movements of Discipleship:

Love me--- From Propriety to Passion

Feed My Sheep-- From Entitlement to Service

Follow Me--- From Relevance to Re-Presentation

Bear My Cross--- From Control to Surrender

What do you all think?

Can you help me with some input at all?

First of all, there is a blog I know that has fun with the very concept you are talking about.

Second of all, this three thing is helpful. I will try to work it in.

Third, let me get my DICTIONARY OF BIBLICAL IMAGERY... it says

3 is a number necessary to establish a number of occurences. One can be an anomaly two can be a coincidence, but three is a pattern.

Also three is a shorthand way of underlining something and saying THIS IS IMPORTANT IN THIS STORY. Especially true in oral cultures like the Bible and fairy tales originated from.

Three in the Bible also seems to be a number of completeness and thoroughness.

Thanks for your help.

I will include this insight on Sunday.

Well, Clint, I agree with Citrus on this one.

When I read that particular passage and the verses immediately following, I realize that "three" is extremely important.

Just following your verse, Jesus presses Simon Peter three times for an answer as to whether he loved Jesus or not.

I think this was because it was more for Simon Peter's benefit. He needed to overcome any doubt he had, considering it hadn't been long since he denied Jesus three times.

Some people need a lot of reassurance when moving into a new part of their life.

These are just my thoughts and I'm sure they won't help much with your sermon. But, I just wanted to give my point of view on it.

Blessings be upon you always.

Let us know how your sermon goes! :)
